our mission

building up the Church of God,

transforming lives by the power of the Holy Spirit,

proclaiming the second coming of Jesus Christ,

the Cornerstone of our faith

in matthew 16 Jesus asked the apostles, “who do you say that I am?” to which peter responded, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus then affirmed peter with these enigmatic words:

     “blessed are you, simon barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.  I also say to you that you are peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hades shall not overpower it…” matthew 16:13-20

Jesus intimates that He is building a building including stones and gates and keys. by using the name that He Himself had given to simon—peter or cephas, meaning “rock” john 1:42—Jesus indicated that simon was to be a stone in the church.  obviously peter was not the Cornerstone:

1. in just a few verses this same Jesus would call peter a stumbling block, even calling him satan, meaning “adversary”  matthew 16:23;

2. peter himself would teach that Jesus was the Cornerstone in the church and not he himself 1 peter 2:1-10.  however peter and all of the apostles did become foundation stones in the Church that Jesus is building:

the wall of the new jerusalem had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Revelation 21:14

the living Cornerstone

the church that Jesus is building is founded upon Him, the living Cornerstone.  to that Cornerstone Jesus added twelve foundation stones: peter, james, john, andrew, matthew, james of alphaeus, simon the zealot, judas not iscariot, philip, nathanael, thomas, matthias. acts 1:13, 26, all of them made alive by their connection with the living Cornerstone, Jesus.

the mission of the cornerstone church begins with a continuation of the very mission that Jesus gave to the apostles.  we are to be adding new stones to the Church, bringing new lives into contact with Jesus so that they, too, can become living stones in the living temple that He Himself is building.  Jesus is building a temple; we are that temple 1 Corinthians 3:16! like master craftsmen, the members of cornerstone are to be fully involved in laying new stones in the church, in adding new members who come into contact with Jesus through them!
